One part "I Spit on Your Grave" and one part "High Plains Drifter," this tale of raw violence in the old west gallops full-speed down vengeance road while nimbly avoiding the crippling holes of disturbing exploitation. Now, that's not to say there's nothing disturbing here--this is a brutal story featuring heartless murder, horrific abuse, and scenes of bloody torture/revenge that will make you squirm ... but little, if any, of it is written in an exploitative fashion.Dennis R. Miller has crafted a quality example of western pulp, a novel pared down to the bare essentials, stripped of the pretentious bloat that pollutes so many modern day books. At the same time, he proves adept at characterization, fleshing out his characters in sparing snippets so as to not drag down the momentum, but also providing enough emotional nuance to ensure that our protagonist (Nora) and her trainer (Clawson) are fully realized people, not just ciphers on which to hang a string of payback sequences. He even manages to sneak in a smidgen of subversive romance, and he pulls it off with the kind of deceptive simplicity exhibited by the best pulp authors of old.
Probably the best praise I can give Miller's entertaining revenge-western is this: as soon as I finished the novel, I immediately bought the next book in the series. No hesitation, no wavering, no wondering if it was worth the money ... I knew that I wanted to read more about this damaged, gun-slinging, never-back-down heroine Miller had created. Because sometimes vengeance is beautiful.

One Woman'S Vengeance Dennis R 9781257992270 Books Reviews
Under full disclosure i will say that i am a high school classmate of the author. After that i will apologize for being a little late to the dance because i read this some time ago and just realized that i never did a review for it. That said, Nora Hawks strode into my life in the first pages and she has never left. Mr Miller did a wonderful job with character development and with the brevity of a true author made them alive for me. The character of Peter Dawson struck a chord with me and my lasting impression is that the vengeance was as much his as Noras. All of these characters have had impressive lasting power with me.
this was a real page turner, you hesitate to put it down and i can't recommend it highly enough.
I'm a sucker for a strong heroine, and this may have been one of the strongest! I loved the writing style and attention paid to detail. It made for a fantastic read and I could not put it down! I'm eager to read more of this authors work. I was beyond impressed with this book.

Dennis R. Miller beautifully depicts a woman's strength and determination for retribution after watching her husband die then enduring a gruesome rape by the hands of Butch and his posse. Nora delivers a needed balance into a sickening world of evil outlaws that only live to terrorize and kill. This book is worth every cent. After this review, I'm buying Dennis R. Miller's sequel, One Bullet Beyond Justice. Nora Hawks gives a sense of satisfaction and empowerment to anyone who has ever been hurt by the hands of man, yet she also builds a bond and trust with a man, showing there are good men too.
"Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned / Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned." -William Congreve, The Mourning Bride
Truer words were perhaps never more appropriate than for the character of Nora Hawks. In his latest book, Dennis Miller has finally quenched my thirst for real violence and never ceased to convince me that the vengeance in this book is real. The plot is solid; the characters are compelling; the action is gripping and exciting; and the storytelling packs a punch worth taking. Bravo, Mr. Miller, on a job well done.
If you are someone who, like me, is fed to the teeth with the hipster sarcasm, nudge-and-a-wink Tarantino-ization of the 'pulp' genre, you will be thrilled to know that a genuine scholar of pulp literature has finally kept his tongue out of his cheek long enough to write a real pulp novel. The hardest thing in writing is to make it look easy, and Miller does so brilliantly.
The plot will seem familiar. Wronged women have been out for unquenchable vengeance before and they will be again. But the familiarity of the plot is not a liability here but an asset. Like a classic play we can through it admire the unique contribution of a new director. The dialogue is gritty and believable, the characters make you empathize with them enough to forget your own moral assumptions, the descriptions are engrossing and unpretentious. It is well done.
And after a great deal of thought, I think I have finally been able to put my finger on what IS so original about One Woman's Vengeance--that it combines the characteristics of a classic western with the characteristics of a classic crime/detective and does so seamlessly.
The classic pulp novels were filled with larger-than-life characters and over-the-top violence, but were at the same time expressions of genuine emotion and valuable reflections on real-world moral dilemmas and social conflicts. The excitement and dread invited you to think, not to smirk. One Woman's Vengeance reinvigorates this tradition.
So often in books where someone has suffered an incredible injustice, I am unsatisfied with the "payback." That is not the case here! Dennis R. Miller launches us into Nora's new life, one sprung from circumstances that leave her alone with a burning desire to get even with those who have torn her happy life to shreds. Her strong, take-charge personality, and willingness to push herself to the limits while training to kill, is a woman I could follow and root for. Miller does not disappoint as Nora takes out members of this cruel band of men, and in some surprising (and refreshing) ways! A satisfying read all around! So much so, I just ordered his second book, One Bullet Beyond Justice!
